Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.

The most common male names were John (11), Michael, Patrick, James and William. For women it was Mary (12), followed by Bridget, Annie, Ellen and Margaret; matching the national top five exactly.

Among the rest, the most common occupations were farmer (11%), farm labourer (10.2%), domestic servant (7.9%) and general labourer (4.7%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 21.3% of all Barrets, followed by domestic service, textiles & clothing and general labourers.
What religion is Barret?
Barrets were overwhelmingly Roman Catholic, 96.1% of them. The remainder were mostly Anglican (3.1%) and Jewish (0.8%).
