That low figure reflects just how many children there were in Edwardian Ireland, along with high infant mortality and the limits of public health at the time. Of the McErlanes whose literacy was recorded, 76.7% could both read and write, 12.1% could read but not write, and 11.2% could do neither. Women came out slightly ahead, 78.8% reading and writing against 74% of men. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.

Among the rest, the most common occupations were farmer (10.4%), farm labourer (6.4%), domestic servant (4.8%) and fisherman (4.8%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 16.8% of all McErlanes, followed by domestic service, textiles & clothing and retail & commerce.
What religion is McErlane?
McErlanes were overwhelmingly Roman Catholic, 99.2% of them. The remainder were mostly Presbyterian (0.8%).
