Of the McErlanes whose literacy was recorded, 76.7% could both read and write, 12.1% could read but not write, and 11.2% could do neither. Women came out slightly ahead, 78.8% reading and writing against 74% of men. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.

Among the rest, the most common occupations were farmer (10.4%), farm labourer (6.4%), domestic servant (4.8%) and fisherman (4.8%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 16.8% of all McErlanes, followed by domestic service, textiles & clothing and retail & commerce.
What religion is McErlane?
McErlanes were overwhelmingly Roman Catholic, 99.2% of them. The remainder were mostly Presbyterian (0.8%).
