Women came out slightly ahead, 76.8% reading and writing against 70.8% of men. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.

Among the rest, the most common occupations were farmer (16.1%), general labourer (5.6%), domestic servant (4.8%) and blacksmith / smith (3.2%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 19.4% of all Caufields, followed by textiles & clothing, domestic service and general labourers.

Caufields were overwhelmingly Roman Catholic, 90.3% of them. The remainder were mostly Anglican (4.8%) and Presbyterian (4.8%).
