The McGrails were heavily concentrated in Leitrim, home to 51.2% of them (63 people). Next came Dublin (17), Cavan (12), Mayo (9) and Longford (6).

Of the McGrails whose literacy was recorded, 74.8% could both read and write, 3.3% could read but not write, and 22% could do neither. Men came out slightly ahead, 79.2% reading and writing against 67.4% of women. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.

The most common male names were Patrick (14), Michael, John, Francis and Joseph. For women it was Mary (8), followed by Bridget, Anne, Margaret and Catherine.

The most common entry on a McGrail's census form was "Scholar"; 25.2% (31) were children at school. Among the rest, the most common occupations were farmer (21.1%), general labourer (5.7%), farm labourer (3.3%) and no occupation / dependent (2.4%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 26% of all McGrails, followed by general labourers, building & construction and domestic service.
