Of the Windles whose literacy was recorded, 78.5% could both read and write, 4.1% could read but not write, and 17.4% could do neither. Men came out slightly ahead, 81.7% reading and writing against 75.4% of women. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.

The most common male names were John (14), Patrick, Henry, Michael and Thomas. For women it was Mary (13), followed by Catherine, Bridget, Margaret and Anne.

The most common entry on a Windle's census form was "Scholar"; 20.5% (25) were children at school. Among the rest, the most common occupations were farmer (18.9%), domestic servant (6.6%), farm labourer (4.9%) and general labourer (2.5%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 23.8% of all Windles, followed by domestic service, general labourers and retail & commerce.

Windles were overwhelmingly Roman Catholic, 98.4% of them. The remainder were mostly Anglican (1.6%).
