Men came out slightly ahead, 83.6% reading and writing against 79.6% of women. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.

The most common entry on a McIver's census form was "Scholar"; 25.6% (31) were children at school. Among the rest, the most common occupations were farmer (20.7%), farm labourer (6.6%), medical / nursing (4.1%) and dressmaker / milliner (2.5%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 27.3% of all McIvers, followed by professional, textiles & clothing and domestic service.
What religion is McIver?
Most McIvers, 60.3%, were Roman Catholic. The remainder were mostly Presbyterian (27.3%), Anglican (10.7%) and Non-Conformist (1.7%).
