Men came out slightly ahead, 79.7% reading and writing against 74.5% of women. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.

The most common male names were John (11), Patrick, James, Thomas and Peter. For women it was Margaret (7), followed by Anne, Bridget, Ellen and Mary.

The most common occupation among Cruddens was farmer, 28.2% of them (33 people). Next came scholar / student (12%), farm labourer (6%), domestic servant (4.3%) and knitter / lace worker (4.3%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 35% of all Cruddens, followed by domestic service, textiles & clothing and general labourers.

Cruddens were overwhelmingly Roman Catholic, 97.4% of them. The remainder were mostly Anglican (1.7%).
