Leinster in 1911 Ireland
The 1911 Census recorded 117 people named Leinster in Ireland; roughly one in every 38,000 people carried the name. The name was split fairly evenly between men and women: 60 men and 57 women.
Counties with Leinster in Ireland
Antrim was Leinster country: 38.5% of them (45 people) lived there in 1911. Next came Cavan (37), Down (21), Derry (6) and Tyrone (3).
Leinster average age in 1911
The average Leinster in 1911 was 29.0 years old, 25.4 for men and 32.8 for women; almost exactly in line with the national averages of 29.6 for men and 30.5 for women. That low figure reflects just how many children there were in Edwardian Ireland, along with high infant mortality and the limits of public health at the time. For comparison, average life expectancy in Ireland today is around 83.
Leinster literacy in 1911
Of the Leinsters whose literacy was recorded, 80.4% could both read and write, 5.6% could read but not write, and 14% could do neither. Women came out slightly ahead, 84.9% reading and writing against 75.9% of men. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.
Leinster common first names
The most common male names were John (6), William, James, Robert and Charles. For women it was Elizabeth (7), followed by Margaret, Sarah, Annie and Maggie.
Leinster occupations in 1911
The most common entry on a Leinster's census form was "Scholar"; 25.6% (30) were children at school. Among the rest, the most common occupations were textile worker (7.7%), farm labourer (5.1%), gardener (4.3%) and blacksmith / smith (2.6%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 12% of all Leinsters, followed by textiles & clothing, metal & engineering and domestic service.
What religion is Leinster?
Most Leinsters, 51.3%, were Anglican. The remainder were mostly Presbyterian (35.9%), Plymouth Brethren (8.5%), Baptist (0.9%) and Roman Catholic (0.9%).
