Men came out slightly ahead, 96.4% reading and writing against 92.9% of women. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.

Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 15.4% of all Sparrows, followed by domestic service, retail & commerce and general labourers.

Sparrows were predominantly Anglican (73.5%). The remainder were mostly Roman Catholic (18.8%), Quaker (4.3%) and Presbyterian (0.9%).
