Manifold literacy in 1911
Of the Manifolds whose literacy was recorded, 84% could both read and write, 3.8% could read but not write, and 12.3% could do neither. Women came out slightly ahead, 86.4% reading and writing against 80.9% of men. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.

The most common male names were William (10), Joseph, Thomas, James and John. For women it was Mary (9), followed by Elizabeth, Annie, Bridget and Catherine.

The most common entry on a Manifold's census form was "Scholar"; 15.8% (18) were children at school. Among the rest, the most common occupations were farmer (5.3%), shopkeeper / shop assistant / dealer (5.3%), domestic servant (4.4%) and maid (2.6%). Grouped by sector, domestic service accounted for 7.9% of all Manifolds, followed by agriculture, retail & commerce and transport.
What religion is Manifold?
Manifolds were predominantly Roman Catholic (85.1%). The remainder were mostly Anglican (14%) and Presbyterian (0.9%).
