The Coalters were heavily concentrated in Fermanagh, home to 73.2% of them (82 people). Next came Tyrone (16), Armagh (6), Down (3) and Antrim (2).

Of the Coalters whose literacy was recorded, 80.9% could both read and write, 1.8% could read but not write, and 17.3% could do neither. Women came out slightly ahead, 86.4% reading and writing against 74.5% of men. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.

The most common male names were John (5), William, George, Joseph and Alexander. For women it was Mary Jane (3), followed by Annie, Elizabeth, Eva and Jane.

The most common entry on a Coalter's census form was "Scholar"; 22.3% (25) were children at school. Among the rest, the most common occupations were farmer (16.1%), farm labourer (7.1%), domestic servant (5.4%) and shopkeeper / shop assistant / dealer (3.6%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 23.2% of all Coalters, followed by domestic service, retail & commerce and no occupation / dependent.

Most Coalters, 66.1%, were Anglican. The remainder were mostly Methodist (25.9%), Presbyterian (4.5%) and Roman Catholic (3.6%).
