The Tumiltys were heavily concentrated in Down, home to 82% of them (91 people). Next came Meath (7), Antrim (4), Monaghan (4) and Roscommon (3).

Men came out slightly ahead, 75% reading and writing against 67.3% of women. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.

The most common male names were John (11), Bernard, Hugh, James and Patrick. For women it was Mary (10), followed by Annie, Bridget, Margaret and Alice.

The most common entry on a Tumilty's census form was "Scholar"; 16.2% (18) were children at school. Among the rest, the most common occupations were farmer (9%), general labourer (8.1%), textile worker (6.3%) and farm labourer (3.6%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 14.4% of all Tumiltys, followed by textiles & clothing, general labourers and manufacturing & trades.
What religion is Tumilty?
Tumiltys were overwhelmingly Roman Catholic, 97.3% of them. The remainder were mostly Presbyterian (1.8%) and Anglican (0.9%).
