The 1911 Census recorded 110 people named Boshell in Ireland; roughly one in every 40,000 people carried the name. The name was split fairly evenly between men and women: 51 men and 59 women.

The Boshells were heavily concentrated in Dublin, home to 79.1% of them (87 people). Next came Meath (9), Mayo (7), Tipperary (6) and Kildare (1).

Boshell literacy in 1911
Of the Boshells whose literacy was recorded, 78.7% could both read and write, 2.8% could read but not write, and 18.5% could do neither. Men came out slightly ahead, 82% reading and writing against 75.9% of women. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.

The most common male names were John (8), Patrick, Michael, Thomas and William. For women it was Mary (14), followed by Anne, Elizabeth, Ellen and Anna.

The most common entry on a Boshell's census form was "Scholar"; 19.1% (21) were children at school. Among the rest, the most common occupations were domestic servant (7.3%), farm labourer (6.4%), general labourer (5.5%) and shopkeeper / shop assistant / dealer (5.5%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 9.1% of all Boshells, followed by domestic service, professional and general labourers.
What religion is Boshell?
Boshells were overwhelmingly Roman Catholic, 93.6% of them. The remainder were mostly Anglican (6.4%).
