Women came out slightly ahead, 73.1% reading and writing against 62% of men. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.

The most common male names were John (11), James, Patrick, Michael and Robert. For women it was Mary (8), followed by Bridget, Catherine, Kate and Annie.

The most common entry on a Brian's census form was "Scholar"; 15% (16) were children at school. Among the rest, the most common occupations were farm labourer (10.3%), domestic servant (8.4%), general labourer (7.5%) and farmer (5.6%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 16.8% of all Brians, followed by domestic service, general labourers and retail & commerce.
What religion is Brian?
Most Brians, 67.3%, were Roman Catholic. The remainder were mostly Anglican (11.2%), Methodist (10.3%) and Presbyterian (7.5%).
