That low figure reflects just how many children there were in Edwardian Ireland, along with high infant mortality and the limits of public health at the time. For comparison, average life expectancy in Ireland today is around 83.

Of the Magranes whose literacy was recorded, 76.6% could both read and write, 3.7% could read but not write, and 19.6% could do neither. Women came out slightly ahead, 77.8% reading and writing against 75% of men. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.

The most common male names were John (7), Patrick, William, James and Thomas. For women it was Mary (12), followed by Bridget, Anne, Margaret and Kate.

The most common entry on a Magrane's census form was "Scholar"; 17.8% (19) were children at school. Among the rest, the most common occupations were farmer (10.3%), domestic servant (6.5%), farm labourer (3.7%) and general labourer (3.7%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 15.9% of all Magranes, followed by domestic service, general labourers and professional.
What religion is Magrane?
Magranes were overwhelmingly Roman Catholic, 97.2% of them. The remainder were mostly Anglican (2.8%).
