Pluck average age in 1911

The average Pluck in 1911 was 30.6 years old, 27.0 for men and 34.6 for women; almost exactly in line with the national averages of 29.6 for men and 30.5 for women. That low figure reflects just how many children there were in Edwardian Ireland, along with high infant mortality and the limits of public health at the time. For comparison, average life expectancy in Ireland today is around 83.

Pluck literacy in 1911

Of the Plucks whose literacy was recorded, 73.5% could both read and write, 5.9% could read but not write, and 20.6% could do neither. Women came out slightly ahead, 75.5% reading and writing against 71.7% of men. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.

Grouped by sector, general labourers accounted for 9.4% of all Plucks, followed by agriculture, transport and domestic service.
