Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.

Next came scholar / student (12.4%), farm labourer (9.5%), general labourer (3.8%) and shopkeeper / shop assistant / dealer (3.8%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 37.1% of all Dooceys, followed by general labourers, retail & commerce and no occupation / dependent.
