That low figure reflects just how many children there were in Edwardian Ireland, along with high infant mortality and the limits of public health at the time. For comparison, average life expectancy in Ireland today is around 83.
Hiney literacy in 1911
Of the Hineys whose literacy was recorded, 78.6% could both read and write, 3.1% could read but not write, and 17.3% could do neither. Women came out slightly ahead, 82.1% reading and writing against 76.3% of men. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.

The most common male names were James (11), John, Patrick, Michael and Edward. For women it was Mary (11), followed by Anne, Bridget, Margaret and Rose.

The most common entry on a Hiney's census form was "Scholar"; 26.5% (26) were children at school. Among the rest, the most common occupations were farmer (12.2%), farm labourer (9.2%), railway / tram worker (6.1%) and general labourer (4.1%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 21.4% of all Hineys, followed by transport, general labourers and textiles & clothing.
What religion is Hiney?
Hineys were overwhelmingly Roman Catholic, 99% of them. The remainder were mostly Anglican (1%).
