The 1911 Census recorded 97 people named Mally in Ireland; roughly one in every 45,000 people carried the name. The name was split fairly evenly between men and women: 44 men and 53 women.

The Mallys were heavily concentrated in Mayo, home to 87.6% of them (85 people). Next came Galway (4), Kerry (3), Leitrim (2) and Cork (1).

That low figure reflects just how many children there were in Edwardian Ireland, along with high infant mortality and the limits of public health at the time. Mally literacy in 1911
Of the Mallys whose literacy was recorded, 52.1% could both read and write, 5.2% could read but not write, and 42.7% could do neither. Women came out slightly ahead, 59.6% reading and writing against 43.2% of men. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.

The most common male names were John (8), Patrick, Michael, William and Anthony. For women it was Mary (16), followed by Bridget, Margaret, Catherine and Ellen.

The most common entry on a Mally's census form was "Scholar"; 25.8% (25) were children at school. Among the rest, the most common occupations were farmer (23.7%), knitter / lace worker (3.1%), domestic servant (2.1%) and general labourer (2.1%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 25.8% of all Mallys, followed by textiles & clothing, domestic service and general labourers.
What religion is Mally?
Mallys were overwhelmingly Roman Catholic, 95.9% of them. The remainder were mostly Anglican (2.1%).
