Speirs literacy in 1911
Of the Speirses whose literacy was recorded, 90.4% could both read and write, 1.1% could read but not write, and 8.5% could do neither. Women came out slightly ahead, 92.7% reading and writing against 87.2% of men. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.

Among the rest, the most common occupations were farmer (11.5%), textile worker (11.5%), shopkeeper / shop assistant / dealer (7.3%) and general labourer (4.2%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 15.6% of all Speirses, followed by textiles & clothing, retail & commerce and general labourers.

Most Speirses, 51%, were Presbyterian. The remainder were mostly Anglican (33.3%), Roman Catholic (11.5%), Congregationalist (2.1%) and Baptist (1%).
