The 1911 Census recorded 93 people named Lynd in Ireland; roughly one in every 47,000 people carried the name. The name was split fairly evenly between men and women: 43 men and 50 women.

The Lynds were heavily concentrated in Derry, home to 71% of them (66 people). Next came Antrim (16), Tyrone (9), Donegal (1) and Dublin (1).

The average Lynd in 1911 was 33.1 years old, 27.5 for men and 37.7 for women; noticeably older than the national averages of 29.6 for men and 30.5 for women. That low figure reflects just how many children there were in Edwardian Ireland, along with high infant mortality and the limits of public health at the time. For comparison, average life expectancy in Ireland today is around 83.
Lynd literacy in 1911
Of the Lynds whose literacy was recorded, 91.2% could both read and write, 0% could read but not write, and 8.8% could do neither. Women came out slightly ahead, 94% reading and writing against 87.8% of men. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.
Lynd common first names
The most common male names were John (6), James, Joseph, Robert and Bob. For women it was Mary (10), followed by Annie, Elizabeth, Anna and Catherine.
Lynd occupations in 1911
The most common entry on a Lynd's census form was "Scholar"; 14% (13) were children at school. Among the rest, the most common occupations were farmer (11.8%), clerk / office worker (4.3%), barber / hairdresser (2.2%) and carpenter / joiner (2.2%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 11.8% of all Lynds, followed by building & construction, clerical & administration and retail & commerce.
What religion is Lynd?
Most Lynds, 61.3%, were Presbyterian. The remainder were mostly Anglican (19.4%), Roman Catholic (18.3%) and Agnostic (1.1%).
