Of the Freelys whose literacy was recorded, 82.6% could both read and write, 2.3% could read but not write, and 15.1% could do neither. The figures were much the same for men and women. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.

The most common entry on a Freely's census form was "Scholar"; 38.6% (34) were children at school. Among the rest, the most common occupations were farmer (21.6%), general labourer (2.3%), herd / dairy worker (1.1%) and housekeeper (1.1%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 22.7% of all Freelys, followed by general labourers, retail & commerce and domestic service.
