The 1911 Census recorded 80 people named Gethings in Ireland; roughly one in every 55,000 people carried the name. The name was split fairly evenly between men and women: 40 men and 40 women.

Gethings literacy in 1911
Of the Gethingses whose literacy was recorded, 83.8% could both read and write, 1.2% could read but not write, and 15% could do neither. Men came out slightly ahead, 85% reading and writing against 82.5% of women. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.

The most common male names were Thomas (4), John, Patrick, William and Charles Henry. For women it was Ellen (4), followed by Mary, Elizabeth M, Alice and Allen.

The most common entry on a Gethings's census form was "Scholar"; 23.8% (19) were children at school. Among the rest, the most common occupations were farmer (13.8%), general labourer (6.2%), shopkeeper / shop assistant / dealer (6.2%) and clerk / office worker (3.8%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 16.2% of all Gethingses, followed by general labourers, retail & commerce and clerical & administration.
What religion is Gethings?
Most Gethingses, 60%, were Roman Catholic. The remainder were mostly Anglican (40%).
