That low figure reflects just how many children there were in Edwardian Ireland, along with high infant mortality and the limits of public health at the time. For comparison, average life expectancy in Ireland today is around 83.

Of the Syrons whose literacy was recorded, 62.5% could both read and write, 1.2% could read but not write, and 36.2% could do neither. Women came out slightly ahead, 68.2% reading and writing against 55.6% of men. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.

The most common male names were Michael (7), Patrick, John, Dominick and Hugh. For women it was Mary (12), followed by Bridget, Ellen, Anne and Maria.

The most common occupation among Syrons was farmer, 37.5% of them (30 people). Next came scholar / student (13.8%), no occupation / dependent (3.8%), agent / manager (2.5%) and general labourer (1.2%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 37.5% of all Syrons, followed by no occupation / dependent, retail & commerce and general labourers.
