That low figure reflects just how many children there were in Edwardian Ireland, along with high infant mortality and the limits of public health at the time. Freeborn literacy in 1911
Of the Freeborns whose literacy was recorded, 76.3% could both read and write, 1.3% could read but not write, and 22.4% could do neither. Women came out slightly ahead, 79.4% reading and writing against 73.8% of men. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.

The most common male names were James (8), Richard, George, John and Robert. For women it was Edith (2), followed by Elizabeth, Lizzie, Lucy and Maggie.
Freeborn occupations in 1911
The most common occupation among Freeborns was farmer, 26.6% of them (21 people). Next came scholar / student (17.7%), carpenter / joiner (5.1%), farm labourer (3.8%) and dressmaker / milliner (1.3%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 30.4% of all Freeborns, followed by building & construction, textiles & clothing and public service & defence.
What religion is Freeborn?
Freeborns were predominantly Anglican (89.9%). The remainder were mostly Methodist (10.1%).
