The 1911 Census recorded 78 people named Karney in Ireland; roughly one in every 56,000 people carried the name. The name was split fairly evenly between men and women: 40 men and 38 women.

Dublin had the largest share of Karneys, 23.1% (18 people). Next came Mayo (11), Longford (10), Waterford (7) and Wexford (6).

The average Karney in 1911 was 30.7 years old, 26.5 for men and 35.2 for women; almost exactly in line with the national averages of 29.6 for men and 30.5 for women. That low figure reflects just how many children there were in Edwardian Ireland, along with high infant mortality and the limits of public health at the time. For comparison, average life expectancy in Ireland today is around 83.
Karney literacy in 1911
Of the Karneys whose literacy was recorded, 88.7% could both read and write, 1.4% could read but not write, and 9.9% could do neither. Men came out slightly ahead, 97.3% reading and writing against 79.4% of women. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.
Karney common first names
The most common male names were Michael (6), Patrick, John, James and Thomas; the same five names that topped the list nationally. For women it was Mary (7), followed by Bridget, Margaret, Catherine and Alice.
Karney occupations in 1911
The most common entry on a Karney's census form was "Scholar"; 20.5% (16) were children at school. Among the rest, the most common occupations were farm labourer (9%), farmer (7.7%), teacher (6.4%) and general labourer (5.1%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 19.2% of all Karneys, followed by domestic service, professional and general labourers.
What religion is Karney?
Karneys were predominantly Roman Catholic (88.5%). The remainder were mostly Anglican (10.3%) and Presbyterian (1.3%).
