Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 8% of all Howies, followed by general labourers, manufacturing & trades and metal & engineering.

Most Howies, 56%, were Presbyterian. The remainder were mostly Anglican (30.7%), Roman Catholic (8%) and Methodist (5.3%).
