Of the Brodies whose literacy was recorded, 91.7% could both read and write, 1.4% could read but not write, and 6.9% could do neither. Women came out slightly ahead, 92.7% reading and writing against 90.3% of men. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.

Among the rest, the most common occupations were farmer (9.6%), domestic servant (6.8%), dressmaker / milliner (4.1%) and agent / manager (2.7%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 11% of all Brodies, followed by domestic service, textiles & clothing and retail & commerce.
What religion is Brodie?
Most Brodies, 64.4%, were Roman Catholic. The remainder were mostly Presbyterian (20.5%), Anglican (9.6%) and Jewish (5.5%).
