Ready in 1911 Ireland
The 1911 Census recorded 73 people named Ready in Ireland; roughly one in every 60,000 people carried the name. There were noticeably more men than women recorded: 43 men to 30 women.
Counties with Ready in Ireland
Kilkenny had the largest share of Readys, 24.7% (18 people). Next came Kildare (17), Clare (7), Tipperary (6) and Antrim (5).
Ready average age in 1911
The average Ready in 1911 was 35.3 years old, 36.4 for men and 33.6 for women; noticeably older than the national averages of 29.6 for men and 30.5 for women. That low figure reflects just how many children there were in Edwardian Ireland, along with high infant mortality and the limits of public health at the time. For comparison, average life expectancy in Ireland today is around 83.
Ready literacy in 1911
Of the Readys whose literacy was recorded, 69.9% could both read and write, 2.7% could read but not write, and 27.4% could do neither. The figures were much the same for men and women. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.
Ready common first names
The most common male names were William (7), Patrick, John, Thomas and Michael. For women it was Mary (7), followed by Margaret, Anne, Alice and Ann.
Ready occupations in 1911
The most common entry on a Ready's census form was "Scholar"; 15.1% (11) were children at school. Among the rest, the most common occupations were farm labourer (13.7%), domestic servant (9.6%), farmer (5.5%) and carpenter / joiner (4.1%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 20.5% of all Readys, followed by domestic service, building & construction and retired & pensioners.
What religion is Ready?
Readys were overwhelmingly Roman Catholic, 91.8% of them. The remainder were mostly Anglican (8.2%).
