Men came out slightly ahead, 85.7% reading and writing against 69% of women. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.

Among the rest, the most common occupations were farmer (5.8%), general labourer (5.8%), other professional (4.3%) and shopkeeper / shop assistant / dealer (2.9%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 7.2% of all Goldsmiths, followed by general labourers, domestic service and professional.
What religion is Goldsmith?
Goldsmiths were predominantly Anglican (71%). The remainder were mostly Roman Catholic (24.6%), Methodist (1.4%) and Plymouth Brethren (1.4%).
