Of the Sykeses whose literacy was recorded, 85.5% could both read and write, 0% could read but not write, and 14.5% could do neither. Women came out slightly ahead, 96.4% reading and writing against 76.5% of men. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.

The most common male names were James (4), John, Alexander, Frederick and William. For women it was Elizabeth (2), followed by Mary, Susan, A Sophia and Amy.

The most common entry on a Sykes's census form was "Scholar"; 14.5% (9) were children at school. Among the rest, the most common occupations were general labourer (6.5%), metal worker / engineer (4.8%), domestic servant (3.2%) and miner / quarryman (3.2%). Grouped by sector, general labourers accounted for 6.5% of all Sykeses, followed by professional, building & construction and metal & engineering.
What religion is Sykes?
Most Sykeses, 66.1%, were Anglican. The remainder were mostly Methodist (19.4%), Roman Catholic (9.7%), Baptist (1.6%) and Congregationalist (1.6%).
