Women came out slightly ahead, 87.1% reading and writing against 73.3% of men. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.

Among the rest, the most common occupations were shoemaker (8.2%), no occupation / dependent (4.9%), clerk / office worker (3.3%) and farmer (3.3%). Grouped by sector, textiles & clothing accounted for 8.2% of all Gabbetts, followed by domestic service, agriculture and no occupation / dependent.
What religion is Gabbett?
Most Gabbetts, 63.9%, were Roman Catholic. The remainder were mostly Anglican (36.1%).
