McHarg literacy in 1911
Of the McHargs whose literacy was recorded, 81.1% could both read and write, 5.7% could read but not write, and 13.2% could do neither. Women came out slightly ahead, 86.2% reading and writing against 75% of men. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.

The most common male names were James (4), John, William, Micheal and Robert. For women it was Mary (3), followed by Charlotte, Ellen, Mary Ann and Mary Jane.

The most common entry on a McHarg's census form was "Scholar"; 14.8% (9) were children at school. Among the rest, the most common occupations were farm labourer (4.9%), farmer (4.9%), no occupation / dependent (4.9%) and other maker / factory worker (4.9%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 11.5% of all McHargs, followed by manufacturing & trades, no occupation / dependent and retail & commerce.
What religion is McHarg?
Most McHargs, 55.7%, were Presbyterian. The remainder were mostly Roman Catholic (23%), Anglican (9.8%), Methodist (4.9%) and Unitarian (4.9%).
