The average Ridgeway in 1911 was 23.8 years old, 23.3 for men and 24.4 for women; noticeably younger than the national averages of 29.6 for men and 30.5 for women. That low figure reflects just how many children there were in Edwardian Ireland, along with high infant mortality and the limits of public health at the time. For comparison, average life expectancy in Ireland today is around 83.
Ridgeway literacy in 1911
Of the Ridgeways whose literacy was recorded, 85.5% could both read and write, 1.8% could read but not write, and 12.7% could do neither. Men came out slightly ahead, 88.9% reading and writing against 82.1% of women. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.

Among the rest, the most common occupations were barber / hairdresser (5%), farmer (5%), shopkeeper / shop assistant / dealer (5%) and porter / messenger (3.3%). Grouped by sector, retail & commerce accounted for 10% of all Ridgeways, followed by agriculture, transport and textiles & clothing.
What religion is Ridgeway?
Most Ridgeways, 63.3%, were Roman Catholic. The remainder were mostly Anglican (28.3%).
