Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.

Next came scholar / student (15%), farmer (10%), shopkeeper / shop assistant / dealer (5%) and carpenter / joiner (3.3%). Grouped by sector, domestic service accounted for 18.3% of all Starks, followed by agriculture, building & construction and retail & commerce.
What religion is Stark?
Most Starks, 56.7%, were Presbyterian. The remainder were mostly Anglican (25%), Roman Catholic (13.3%) and Plymouth Brethren (3.3%).
