That low figure reflects just how many children there were in Edwardian Ireland, along with high infant mortality and the limits of public health at the time. For comparison, average life expectancy in Ireland today is around 83.

Of the McCans whose literacy was recorded, 70.9% could both read and write, 10.9% could read but not write, and 18.2% could do neither. Men came out slightly ahead, 82.8% reading and writing against 57.7% of women. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.

The most common male names were James (4), Patrick, Henry, John and Michael. For women it was Mary (9), followed by Jane, Ann, Bridged and Bridget.

The most common occupation among McCans was farmer, 15.3% of them (9 people). Next came general labourer (11.9%), scholar / student (11.9%), farm labourer (8.5%) and domestic servant (6.8%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 23.7% of all McCans, followed by general labourers, domestic service and textiles & clothing.
What religion is McCan?
McCans were predominantly Roman Catholic (83.1%). The remainder were mostly Anglican (8.5%) and Presbyterian (8.5%).
