That low figure reflects just how many children there were in Edwardian Ireland, along with high infant mortality and the limits of public health at the time. Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 10.2% of all Merritts, followed by building & construction, fishing and general labourers.

What religion is Merritt?

The largest religious group among Merritts was Anglican, at 45.8%. The remainder were mostly Roman Catholic (44.1%), Methodist (3.4%) and Presbyterian (1.7%).
