That low figure reflects just how many children there were in Edwardian Ireland, along with high infant mortality and the limits of public health at the time. Of the McKells whose literacy was recorded, 78.2% could both read and write, 3.6% could read but not write, and 18.2% could do neither. The figures were much the same for men and women. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.

The most common male names were James (5), Bernard, John, William and Joseph. For women it was Mary (3), followed by Annie, Jane, Annie Dawson and Elizabeth.

The most common entry on a McKell's census form was "Scholar"; 20.7% (12) were children at school. Among the rest, the most common occupations were shopkeeper / shop assistant / dealer (12.1%), domestic servant (3.4%), farmer (3.4%) and retired / pensioner (3.4%). Grouped by sector, retail & commerce accounted for 13.8% of all McKells, followed by domestic service, textiles & clothing and agriculture.
What religion is McKell?
Most McKells, 53.4%, were Roman Catholic. The remainder were mostly Methodist (29.3%), Anglican (10.3%) and Presbyterian (5.2%).
