Men came out slightly ahead, 80.8% reading and writing against 75.9% of women. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.

The most common occupation among Sheills was farm labourer, 12.3% of them (7 people). Next came scholar / student (10.5%), domestic servant (8.8%), farmer (8.8%) and fisherman (8.8%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 21.1% of all Sheills, followed by domestic service, fishing and retail & commerce.
