That low figure reflects just how many children there were in Edwardian Ireland, along with high infant mortality and the limits of public health at the time. Of the Varians whose literacy was recorded, 91.1% could both read and write, 1.8% could read but not write, and 7.1% could do neither. Women came out slightly ahead, 92.3% reading and writing against 90% of men. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.

The most common male names were John (6), Henry, Thomas, George and Alexander. For women it was Elizabeth (2), followed by Ellen, Mary, Annie and Annie S.
Varian occupations in 1911
The most common entry on a Varian's census form was "Scholar"; 23.2% (13) were children at school. Among the rest, the most common occupations were other maker / factory worker (8.9%), no occupation / dependent (5.4%), baker / confectioner (3.6%) and dressmaker / milliner (3.6%). Grouped by sector, manufacturing & trades accounted for 10.7% of all Varians, followed by building & construction, no occupation / dependent and textiles & clothing.
What religion is Varian?
The largest religious group among Varians was Roman Catholic, at 46.4%. The remainder were mostly Anglican (28.6%), Unitarian (23.2%) and Agnostic (1.8%).
