The 1911 Census recorded 55 people named McGurn in Ireland; roughly one in every 80,000 people carried the name. The name was split fairly evenly between men and women: 29 men and 26 women.

The McGurns were heavily concentrated in Fermanagh, home to 70.9% of them (39 people). Next came Cavan (9), Mayo (3), Tyrone (2) and Dublin (1).

That low figure reflects just how many children there were in Edwardian Ireland, along with high infant mortality and the limits of public health at the time. For comparison, average life expectancy in Ireland today is around 83.
McGurn literacy in 1911
Of the McGurns whose literacy was recorded, 49.1% could both read and write, 13.2% could read but not write, and 37.7% could do neither. Men came out slightly ahead, 50% reading and writing against 48% of women. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.
McGurn common first names
The most common male names were John (5), Michael, Patrick, James and Thomas; the same five names that topped the list nationally. For women it was Margaret (4), followed by Mary, Rose, Catherine and Mary Anne.
McGurn occupations in 1911
The most common occupation among McGurns was farmer, 27.3% of them (15 people). Next came scholar / student (10.9%), farm labourer (5.5%), domestic servant (1.8%) and gardener (1.8%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 34.5% of all McGurns, followed by domestic service and retired & pensioners.

McGurns were overwhelmingly Roman Catholic, 98.2% of them.
