The 1911 Census recorded 55 people named Shier in Ireland; roughly one in every 80,000 people carried the name. The name was split fairly evenly between men and women: 26 men and 29 women.

The Shiers were heavily concentrated in Limerick, home to 74.5% of them (41 people). Next came Derry (6), Clare (4), Mayo (3) and Kildare (1).

The average Shier in 1911 was 30.5 years old, 27.6 for men and 33.0 for women; almost exactly in line with the national averages of 29.6 for men and 30.5 for women. That low figure reflects just how many children there were in Edwardian Ireland, along with high infant mortality and the limits of public health at the time. For comparison, average life expectancy in Ireland today is around 83.
Shier literacy in 1911
Of the Shiers whose literacy was recorded, 87.3% could both read and write, 0% could read but not write, and 12.7% could do neither. Men came out slightly ahead, 88.5% reading and writing against 86.2% of women. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.

The most common male names were George (2), John, Joseph, Julius and Adam. For women it was Alice Helen (2), followed by Henrietta, Katherine, Sarah and Agnes L M.
Shier occupations in 1911
The most common entry on a Shier's census form was "Scholar"; 29.1% (16) were children at school. Among the rest, the most common occupations were farmer (27.3%), teacher (3.6%), medical / nursing (1.8%) and other professional (1.8%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 27.3% of all Shiers, followed by professional and public service & defence.
What religion is Shier?
Most Shiers, 52.7%, were Anglican. The remainder were mostly Methodist (43.6%) and Presbyterian (3.6%).
