Men came out slightly ahead, 64.3% reading and writing against 52% of women. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.

Among the rest, the most common occupations were farm labourer (14.8%), farmer (11.1%), domestic servant (9.3%) and general labourer (5.6%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 25.9% of all McDonnalds, followed by domestic service, general labourers and textiles & clothing.

McDonnalds were overwhelmingly Roman Catholic, 90.7% of them. The remainder were mostly Anglican (7.4%).
