Men came out slightly ahead, 88.5% reading and writing against 81.5% of women. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.

Among the rest, the most common occupations were general labourer (17%), farm labourer (11.3%), domestic servant (7.5%) and carpenter / joiner (1.9%). Grouped by sector, general labourers accounted for 17% of all Critchleys, followed by agriculture, domestic service and building & construction.
