Men came out slightly ahead, 82.8% reading and writing against 69.6% of women. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.

Among the rest, the most common occupations were farm labourer (7.5%), domestic servant (5.7%), farmer (5.7%) and housekeeper (5.7%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 13.2% of all Develins, followed by domestic service, general labourers and manufacturing & trades.

Develins were predominantly Roman Catholic (83%). The remainder were mostly Anglican (13.2%), Plymouth Brethren (1.9%) and Presbyterian (1.9%).
