That low figure reflects just how many children there were in Edwardian Ireland, along with high infant mortality and the limits of public health at the time. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.

The most common male names were Edward (5), John, Patrick, Thomas and James. For women it was Mary (5), followed by Christina, Elizabeth, Annie M and Bridget.

The most common entry on a Cooling's census form was "Scholar"; 20% (10) were children at school. Among the rest, the most common occupations were carter / driver / groom (6%), domestic servant (4%), farmer (4%) and plasterer / slater / thatcher (4%). Grouped by sector, transport accounted for 10% of all Coolings, followed by domestic service, agriculture and building & construction.
