Castlemorris, Ballymullen Road, Garryruth, Tralee, Co. Kerry

A stretch of rubble stone wall running along Ballymullen Road carries within it the remains of a fifteenth century tower house, its older masonry absorbed into a boundary that was built up around it some four centuries later.

It is the kind of survival that rewards a second glance: what reads at first as an ordinary field wall is, in part, the fabric of a castle that has been standing, in some form, since around 1450.

Castlemorris belongs to the long era of tower house building in Ireland, when local lords and gentry across the countryside raised these narrow, fortified stone residences as both dwelling and defensive statement. Thousands were built between the fourteenth and seventeenth centuries, and most have long since collapsed, been quarried for stone, or vanished into later farm buildings. Here, the process took a particular turn around 1840, when the surviving remains were incorporated into a new rubble stone wall marking the boundary onto Ballymullen Road. Rather than being cleared away, the old castle fabric was effectively repurposed as ready made building material and structural support, folded into a piece of nineteenth century estate or field boundary work.

The result is a site where two periods of building sit within the same stretch of masonry, the medieval stonework distinguishable, to a careful eye, from the later work around it. It is not a ruin set apart in a field for admiration, but a working boundary wall that happens to have swallowed a castle, which makes it easy to pass without recognising what is there.
