Woodlands House, Birr, Co. Offaly

Built around 1810 as a tall, narrow three-bay dwelling of three storeys, it has been widened over time by two-storey extensions to either side, so that what stands today reads as broader and more settled than its original slim profile would suggest. The façade itself has been stripped back, leaving the timber sash windows to do the work of telling its age: those on the second floor are the oldest, styled in the manner of the late eighteenth century, while the ground and first floors carry larger two-over-two sashes that belong to a later phase of alteration or replacement. It is a house that wears its history in glass and timber rather than in ornament.

That layered quality extends to its identity as well as its fabric. In the early nineteenth century the house was known as Kearney Ville, a name that points directly to its owners at the time, the Kearney family. At some point ownership passed on, and with the new owners came a new name, Woodlands, the one that has stuck. Behind the house, the original outbuildings have not survived; what remains is a run of concrete block sheds with lean-to corrugated-iron roofs, a plainer, later addition to the site than the outbuildings they replaced. The main block itself has picked up further extensions over the years, including a two-storey return and a mix of single- and two-storey additions to the rear, along with a converted remnant of an outbuilding now folded into the southern side of the rear elevation. The roofscape reflects this piecemeal growth too, with pitched slate over the main house, terracotta ridge tiles and smooth rendered chimneystacks with terracotta pots, hipped slate roofs over the side extensions, and flat roofs covering the rear additions.

Woodlands House is one of a number of country houses that sit around Birr, part of a loose scattering of gentry and merchant dwellings that helped shape the character of the town's surrounding countryside. It does not announce itself with elaborate detailing; the door opening on the façade is square-headed, fitted with a replacement timber door, sidelight and overlights, and the walls are finished plainly in pebbledash over a smooth rendered plinth. What makes it worth pausing over is less any single feature than the way the building accumulates its own history in layers, older windows tucked above newer ones, an inherited name sitting over a discarded one, and additions wrapping around a core that has otherwise been simplified almost to anonymity.
