Beechy Park, Ricketstown Or Bettyfield, Co. Carlow

There is a particular kind of house in Ireland that carries two decades openly on its face, and Beechy Park is one of them.

Built around 1780 as a detached five-bay, three-storey block over a basement, it received a thorough reworking some forty-five years later that softened its Georgian severity without erasing it. The result is a building that reads, on close inspection, like two houses layered into one: the plain, confident geometry of the late eighteenth century underneath, and the more theatrical classicism of the 1820s laid over the front.

The earliest phase is legible in the carved granite dressings that survive to both the front and rear elevations, including doorcases and Diocletian windows, the tall, semicircular openings divided by two vertical mullions that architects of the period borrowed from Roman thermal buildings by way of Palladio. These appear on both faces of the house, suggesting the rear elevation was considered worth finishing to nearly the same standard as the front, not always the case in houses of this scale. The renovation of around 1825 then added a portico to the entrance front, granite window surrounds to the centre bay, and a substantial remodelling of the interior, changes that align with a broader early nineteenth-century fashion for giving older houses a more assertive, temple-fronted presence. A stable complex of the same 1825 phase still stands on the site, a reminder that a house of this size was run as a working estate as much as a residence, with its own accommodation for horses, carriages and the staff who kept them.

Taken together, the granite Diocletian windows and the added portico make Beechy Park a useful lesson in how Irish country houses were rarely built once and left alone. The eighteenth-century shell provided the bones; the nineteenth-century owners provided the fashionable dressing, and the stable range fills in the practical picture of daily estate life around both.
