The Reeks, Whitefield, Co. Kerry

The core block, an L-plan structure of five bays and two storeys, dates from around 1825, though the fabric may fold in an earlier house built close to a century before, around 1720. Rather than demolishing what came before, successive owners seem to have built around and through it, a common enough pattern in Irish country houses but one that leaves a building with a layered, slightly puzzled character once you know to look for it.

The most legible addition came after 1921, when the house was renovated and extended to the south-west on its own L-shaped plan: a three-bay two-storey lateral wing terminating in a projecting end bay, with a long nine-bay single-storey return stretching back to the north-west. The result is a building that reads differently depending on which side you approach from, its roofline a patchwork of pitched and hipped slate sections punctuated by rendered chimneystacks with cornices. The detailing throughout is restrained but careful: overhanging eaves with plastered soffits, cast-iron rainwater goods, and ruled-and-lined render, a finish scored to imitate cut stone, sitting above a limestone plinth. The windows keep to the traditional timber sash pattern of six panes over six, set in limestone sills, while the entrance breaks from this quietness with paired render pilasters and an entablature framing a glazed double-leaf door carved with some care, flanked by round-headed windows in the projecting porch.

To the south-west stands a walled garden of about 1820, its enclosure built in red brick rather than the stone more usual in the region. Walled gardens of this date were practical structures as much as ornamental ones, their brick walls chosen for the way they retained heat and helped fruit trees trained against them ripen earlier in the season. Taken together with the house's two centuries of alteration, the garden suggests a property that was worked as much as it was lived in, its owners adapting both dwelling and grounds across generations rather than settling on a single design and leaving it untouched.
